How to Build a Product Shortlist Without Collecting Endless Tabs
A shortlist is not a folder of everything that looked interesting. It is a small set of records that still have a factual reason to remain after obvious mismatches are removed.
Write the non-negotiable product identity first
Record the object, required option and one functional constraint. “Crossbody bag, fits a 25 cm item, adjustable strap” is more useful than a long list of style preferences.
Remove candidates in a cheap order
- Wrong product or incomplete part.
- Required option absent.
- Dimensions clearly incompatible.
- Price basis not comparable or outside the workable range.
- Evidence gap large enough to block the decision.
There is no reason to inspect stitching closely after the dimensions already fail.
Keep one reason and one unknown beside each record
For example: “kept because the correct closure is shown; unknown interior depth.” This prevents the strongest marketing image from replacing the actual selection criteria.
Three to five candidates are usually enough for deep comparison
More records can help when the result pool is diverse. Once the same silhouettes and unknowns repeat, new tabs add work without adding information.
Stop searching when the next action is comparison
If several records match the core requirement, use the side-by-side listing method. Return to search only when every candidate fails the same requirement or the product definition changes.
